A Road Trip and a RunUpdate.

Roooooad Trip!

Today, I began on my way to my favorite place in the world, Pittsburgh, PA, for a destination race—the Dick’s Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Half Marathon! But first, I’m taking an overnight pit stop in the Nation’s Capital to visit my sister. 🙂

So friggin' beautiful.
So friggin’ beautiful.

I would love, love, love to go running down in Georgetown on the boardwalk and around the Potomac, but I’m resting these legs for the rest of the week. {I’ll never have a problem with tapering, haha!}

I did hem and haw for the longest time about even running this race (I’ve become moreso an Iron Maiden and less of a Cardio Queen), but after doing pretty well at the Tar Heel 10 Miler two weeks ago, I figured I could and should stick to my plans of running it. Besides, I am obsessed with all-things Pittsburgh and couldn’t miss a chance to run its streets and take in its beauty. While I was hemming and hawing, I did tell myself I could just do that via car, but nah, it’s not the same.

Me after my very first race!
Me after my very first race!

After running my very first race ever last year (the DSG Pittsburgh 5K) here, I was jonesin’ to see more of the city by foot. And, as slowly as I run, I’ll be able to really it all in, haha. 😉 I did vow last May to come back and run this half so I’m happy to be in a good place where I’m ready to do it—my way, my speed, no pressure…just running. ‘Cuz that’s how I roll run. {If you missed my last post, scroll on down to it and you’ll see what I mean by that!}

I am looking forward to the Expo like crazy!! Last year, they had pretty much zilch for the 5K’ers. (Hey yinz, what’s up with that? Hopefully somebody with the Powers-That-Be read my post about that last year and made some changes. 5K’ers are runners, too, and they want cool swag!) But, now that I’m running the half, there’s sure to be a lot of merch catching my eye! At some point over the weekend, look for an Instagram pic of me at some vendor table titled, “I WANT ALL THE T-SHIRTS!”, because I surely will want all the t-shirts, and shoes, and stickers, and headbands, and bottles, and whatever else doodad, thingamajiggers they’re selling.

I mean, how cute are these shorts?! {They're by The Fresh Factory.}

In other Pittsburgh racing news, the Rock ‘n Roll Pittsburgh Half Marathon I was planning to come back and run on August 4th, was cancelled this past Sunday (and will be rescheduled for 2014)! On their Facebook page they made it sound like the City of Pittsburgh was the problem. Oh HECK NO. I don’t like annnnybody talking smack on MY city! Y’all know that by now. You can take the girl out of Pittsburgh, but not the Pittsburgh out of the girl!! I quickly was turned off by any future races RnR may have simply by how they stated their reason. Not classy, RnR. Not classy. They also tried to start some Twitter smack with me about it. I wasn’t having it. I just call it as I see it folks–you know the deal here. I interpreted nothin’. I did promptly request to have my registration money returned to me, though. (You could either choose a refund or use the registration money to run another RnR somewhere else.) There are so many other races out there, especially a lot of local ones, that I would be more than happy to run!

Speaking of other local races, I am registered for two more. (And these will be IT for the year—can’t be having my weight training getting all messed up, yo!) They’ll both be in Durham—go Bull City! The first will be June 1st – Running of the Bulls 8K and the second will be the Bull City Race Fest & Food Truck Rodeo Half Marathon on October 20th. Totally stoked and excited to see Durham by foot!

Okay, that’s it for a runupdate on me. Back to my road trip—I’ve got some sightseeing and other touristy things to do. But no running! Again, saving it for Sunday! 😉

  • All the best for the run Cherie. I know you’re going to kick butt bigtime! Let us know next time you’re in DC. Would have been nice to meet you in person 🙂 you’re truly an inspiration to us all!!! Oh btw, have fun at the expo & the race 🙂

  • I did the RnR Las Vegas event in ’11 and, trust me, the city is smart to be concerned. I know they put on a lot of races and probably most of them are fine. But I have seen first-hand what can happen when things don’t go well. Thousands of people are at risk. I refused to sign up for the Pittsburgh half because it was being put on by RnR. So glad someone is looking out for the runners.

    Have a safe trip and welcome home! 🙂

  • Much success this weekend Cherie! Cant wait for the update! Happy touristing! LOL!

  • Good luck this weekend! Safe travels!

  • Hope you have a wonderful run today, Cherie!
