Vega Energizing Smoothies…not just for vegans!

While scrolling through Twitter a few weeks ago, I saw a tweet from @VegaTeam calling out to bloggers asking us to review their Energizing Smoothies. I love smoothies and a boost of energy is always good, but could I, a self-described crazy carnivore non-vegan actually find real taste satisfaction in a vegan smoothie?

vegan protein smoothie drinks

I decided to accept this challenge and give these shakes a try. Within a few days of contacting Vega, a box appeared at my doorstep. Inside were five colorful, enticing bags of goodness.

First, I was impressed with the packaging alone. I was fully expecting large plastic jugs, which is customary for most protein/shake/drink mixes. Instead, there were neat, space-saving, less bulky, more environmentally-friendly pouches to store in my kitchen’s nutritional supplement area {RE: island}. I also loved the design and look of the bags. I knew I couldn’t judge the product solely based on the beauty of the packaging, but if I could, it would’ve already received two thumbs up from me.

Second, each package holds 12 servings. After I got out my trusty calculator {English major here}, I realized I had 60 shakes worth. SIXTY!! I was only expecting a little one-serving pouch! As I continued reading the list of Supplemental Facts on the back of the bags, what I liked even more was printed right there in black and white–the calories, carbs, sugars and protein.

This one here is from the back of the Vanilla Almondilla pouch. Only 92 calories {they’re all 105 calories or less}, 8g carbs, 1g sugar, and 10g protein? Yes, please!

The flavors Vega sent me were:

Choc-A-Lot

Tropical Tango

Vanilla Almondilla

Oh Natural

Bodacious Berry

Third, I do love the natural goodness of it. As you may know just from reading my blog, I do my best to follow a clean-eating lifestyle. I feel no qualms at all about putting these smoothies in my body. The Energizing Smoothies:

-are made from all-natural, plant-based ingredients
-contain a great mix of protein, fiber and Omega-3
-have two servings of veggies
-are dairy, gluten and soy free
-have no sugar added

I also think it’s pretty cool that they were formulated by Brendan Brazier, a vegan, professional Ironman triathlete, and best-selling author on plant-based nutrition. He knows his stuff!

After scoping out the packages and the supplemental information, it was time for my first taste test! I was getting ready for a trail run and decided to begin with Bodacious Berry. It was super easy to mix. I took a scoop of the mix, a cup of cold water, shook it in my shaker, and voila! Instant berry smoothie! They can be made with any-non dairy beverages {my choice is almond milk} or juice, but for this first try I went with water. Water does give it a thinner, more subdued flavor but I found it to still be pretty tasty.

Here I am after my run getting ready to test out the Vanilla Almondilla. Again, I mixed it with water. I LOVED IT. This is my favorite flavor by far. I can taste the almond more than the vanilla, but I think that’s why I think it’s so delicious.

The Choc-A-Lot is my second favorite–but only with the almond milk. I don’t loooove it with water so I feel this is definitely one to mix with a non-dairy beverage to make it taste like I’m not just drinking chocolate water.

I’m feeling just okay about the Tropical Tango. Though that’s because I’m not a tropical-flavor kind of a gal. I love the individual flavors that go into this mix citrus, pineapple, peach, mango–but not mixed together. Haa, I’m odd. I’ve tried it both with the almond milk and the water and it’s still not crazy awesome to me. But again, if you like tropical, you’ll probably love it!

The Oh Natural is just that–good ‘ol natural! This mix is fantastic for creating your own smoothie by tossing in whatever you’d like and blending up a storm! Bananas, berries, coconut, mint–whatever you’d like, the natural flavor won’t get in your way yet you’ll still get the benefits of the veggies, protein, fiber and Omega-3. Oh Snap! Sounds good to me!

So to answer the question I posed at the beginning, yes, yes a crazy carnivore CAN find real taste satisfaction in vegan smoothies. I never felt like I was “missing” anything or that I was necessarily drinking a “vegan” drink at all. They were just tasty, good for me, and left me with no guilt. Vega…very good!

Have any of you tasted these smoothies? Are you a meat-eater or vegan? Somewhere in between? What’s your fave flavor?

*I was not compensated in any way other than receiving the five pouches of mix to review. All opinions are my own.

  • I sampled these for Vega too and posted my review last week (but only received 4 single serving pouches; you lucky girl!). I loved the Choc-a-lot! And Vanilla-Almondilla was a close second.
